Letter for Parents

Mental Health and Well Being

Lots of people are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and under pressure by everything that’s happening.

Our children are just as scared as we are right now. Our children not only can hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our constant tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off school for weeks sounds good to them, they will be picturing a fun time like the summer break, not being trapped at home and not seeing their friends.

Over the coming weeks, you will see an increase in behaviour issues with your children. Whether that is anxiety, anger or protest that they can't do things normally - it will happen. You'll see more meltdowns, tantrums in the coming weeks. This  is normal and expected under the circumstances.

What children need right now is to feel comforted and loved. To feel it's going to be ok. That might mean you have to tear up the perfect schedule to spend time just loving them that bit more. Play in the garden, go on a walk, bake cookies , paint pictures, play board games, watch movies and facetime your relatives and friends. Find a virtual trip to the zoo, read a book together or simply build a den and snuggle under the blankets together.

Don't worry about them going backwards. Every single child is in this boat and they will be okay.

When they are back in the classroom we will find out where they are up to and move them forward. Teachers are experts at this.

Don't pick fights with your child because they do not want to do their school work. At the end of this lock down your child's mental health will be more important than their academic skills.

How they felt during this time will stay with them long after what they did during these weeks is long gone. So keep that in mind each day.

Stay home, stay safe and look after each other.

If you are struggling please contact school for help.

There are many different ways your child can find out information or play on line. Are they safe? Is the game appropriate for their age?
